Aam Khas Bagh is the remains of a highway-inn constructed for the use of royalty as well as common people. It was divided into two parts - the Aam for public use and the Khas for private use by the Royalty. This Royal inn was initially built by Akbar and planned by Mughal architect Hafiz Rakhna. Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan rebuilt it along the Mughal military road between Delhi and Lahore. The Royal couple used to stay here in the old building complex while going to and coming back from Lahore. Later on, Mughal Emperor Jahangir made some additions to this monument. The Aam Khas Bagh is a key monument along the historic Grand Truck Road, the imperial highway of the mughal era used to traverse the north of the Indian subcontinent. The garden complex complements a small palace and contains three rectangular enclosures, including domed bastions, an artificial lake, a long water channel adorned with carved fountains, and a traditional bathhouse known as a hammam. This monument has been listed on the World Monuments Fund Watch List since 2012. The northern gate served as the main entrance to the first and second enclosures. From this gate, the first quadrangle of the garden complex, 179 m. by 122 m. in area, begins. It is enclosed by a four-meter-high brick wall adorned with serrated battlements. Each of the four corners of this enclosure is marked by a projected octagonal bastion surmounted by a domed pavilion. On the inner side of the gateway is an extension of the gate, in the form of a house.
