Tucked away on a hilltop in Kiratpur Sahib, the Dargah of Peer Baba Budhan Shah Ji is a revered site where faith transcends boundaries. Known also as Baba Budhan Ali Shah, Sayyed Shamsuddin, and Peer Baba, this Sufi saint is celebrated by Sikhs, Muslims, and Hindus alike. His life is a remarkable tale of spirituality, mysticism, and unity, embodying the essence of harmony among religions. Born in Talwandi—the birthplace of Guru Nanak Dev Ji—Baba Budhan Shah Ji is believed to have lived an extraordinary lifespan of around 500 years. Though born into a prominent family, he renounced worldly pursuits to embrace the path of Sufism. During his journeys, he encountered Guru Nanak and formed a spiritual bond with Bidhi Chand Chhina and other mystics of the time. Baba Budhan Shah Ji is said to have lived near Rawalpindi before moving to Jammu and eventually settling in Kiratpur during the 15th century. The saint passed away in 1643, during the time of Guru Hargobind Ji. His mausoleum was built on a peaceful hilltop about 200 meters east of Baba Gurditta’s ashram. The shrine remains an enduring symbol of his universal message of peace. Pilgrims from various faiths visit the site, captivated by its serene setting, which offers a perfect space for reflection and spiritual connection. Every October, a grand fair brings the dargah to life, attracting visitors from across the region. The event showcases the cultural vibrancy of the area and highlights the enduring legacy of Baba Budhan Shah Ji’s teachings.
