The Dargah of Syed Shahnur Dewan, or Bhella Dargah, is one of the most important Islamic shrines in Assam, located around 8 kilometers from Barpeta town. Syed Shahnur Dewan was a disciple of the famous Sufi saint Ajan Shah, known for his mystical healing powers. Historical accounts suggest that he treated Queen Fuleswari, wife of Ahom king Shiva Singha, and in gratitude, the king granted him lands and monetary support. Though a copper plate inscribed with this history existed at the dargah, it was removed during the Burmese invasion of Assam in 1842. The shrine has since become a focal point for devotees, particularly those seeking spiritual or physical healing. Many believe that prayers offered here can alleviate medical problems, reflecting the Sufi saint’s healing legacy. The site represents a core aspect of Sufi philosophy — peace, unity, and brotherhood. In terms of architecture, the dargah is simple yet revered for its sanctity, with a calming atmosphere that adds to the spiritual experience. The natural beauty surrounding the dargah, with the River Brahmaputra nearby, further enhances the tranquil environment. Visitors not only come for religious reasons but also to enjoy the scenic surroundings. Managed by the Assam Waqf Board, the dargah is preserved as a cultural and religious monument. The board ensures that the spiritual significance of this dargah remains intact, making it a place of interfaith unity and religious harmony.
