The citadel of Mandu once had twelve gateways but only seven survive today. A solid wall of boulders and rubble runs along a major part of the 45 kilometer perimeter of the hill top in Mandu. The citadel is perched upon a rocky out spur of the Vindhya ranges. Traces of the first fortification date back to 6th century AD.
