Once the center piece of the royal square of the city of Hyderabad, the fountain's original name was Char-su ka Houz or the "the pool of four directions". This was the center point of the present day Charkaman and had four streams running [one in each cardinal direction] and had the Char Bagh surrounding it. This fountain and gardens surrounding it were inspired from Quranic descriptions of Paradise, the Qutb Shahs wanted to show that their new city was heaven on Earth. Currently its called Gulzar Houz and its a shadow of its original self and has underwent countless makeovers. There are legends that gold chains were used as fencing for the fountain in the Nizams era.
