The mosque was built at the behest of Guru Hargobind Ji, the sixth Guru of the Sikhs, as a gesture of goodwill to the local Muslim population who lacked the resources to build a place of worship. The Guru, embodying the Sikh principle of universal service, instructed his Sikhs to construct the mosque, which was completed and handed over to the local Muslims. This mosque, which dates back to the early 17th century during the time of Guru Hargobind Ji, holds immense historical and cultural significance. Its architectural design follows the Mughal style, with characteristic domes and arches. While simple in its design, it stands as a timeless structure that reflects the Guru's message of fostering communal unity and respect among diverse communities. Throughout its existence, Guru ki Maseet has weathered many challenges. During the partition of India in 1947, the mosque fell into neglect and disrepair as many Muslims migrated from the region. Despite this, the mosque remained a testament to the Guru’s vision of brotherhood. In 2003, this historic mosque gained international recognition when UNESCO and the UNDP’s Culture for Peace project highlighted its importance as a symbol of religious tolerance. With their support, the mosque was carefully restored to preserve its original structure. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed with Baba Kirtan Singh, the then-occupant of the mosque, who had already been maintaining it with care. UNESCO's involvement further solidified its role as a beacon of peace and coexistence. The mosque's enduring presence in Sri Hargobindpur serves as a reminder of the sixth Guru’s profound vision of unity among faiths.
