The Khanqah-e-Maula, also known as Shah-e-Hamadan Masjid, is a testament to Kashmir's rich spiritual heritage and architectural brilliance. Nestled in the heart of Srinagar's Old City, this mosque has witnessed centuries of history flow along with the waters of the nearby Jhelum River. Built in 1395 CE, Khanqah-e-Maula is the first Khanqah in the Kashmir valley. These special mosques, associated with specific saints, played a crucial role in spreading Islamic teachings and Sufi traditions throughout the region. The mosque's origins are deeply intertwined with the story of Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani, a Persian Islamic preacher who arrived from Hamadan in the 14th century. His influence was so profound that he became known as Shah-e-Hamadan (the King of Hamadan) and is credited with the widespread conversion to Islam in Kashmir. Recognizing Hamadani's impact, Sultan Sikandar Butshikan commissioned the mosque in his memory. Khanqah-e-Maula is a masterpiece of Kashmiri wooden architecture, boasting intricate designs and ornate decorations that are a testament to the valley's unique artistic traditions. The use of vibrant papier-mache further enhances its beauty, making it a must-see for both pilgrims and art enthusiasts. The mosque's history is one of resilience. Twice destroyed by fire – in 1480 and 1731 – it was rebuilt and expanded each time. Sultan Hassan Shah oversaw its first reconstruction, while Abdul Barkat Khan led the efforts after the second fire. These reconstructions allowed the mosque to evolve while maintaining its spiritual and architectural identity. Today, Khanqah-e-Maula stands proudly between the Fateh Kadal and Zaina Kadal bridges, a living link to Kashmir's past. It continues to serve as a place of worship, a center for Islamic learning, and a powerful reminder of the cultural forces that have shaped the Kashmir valley over the centuries. Visitors to Khanqah-e-Maula are not just entering a mosque, but stepping into a space where history, spirituality, and artistry converge. Its enduring presence in Srinagar's landscape is a living testament to the rich tapestry of Kashmiri culture, and the enduring legacy of Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani.
