Jama Masjid built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in Delhi is known to all but very few people know that a similar Jama Masjid also exists in Gorakhpur. Built by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's second son Muazzam Shah in 1699, the mosque is located at Ghantaghar-Urdu Bazar area in Gorakhpur

The historic Jama Masjid Urdu Bazar is a priceless heritage of the Mughal architecture. The mosque still tells the glory of the Mughal Sultanate with its pride and glory. The architecture of the Mughal Sultanate is amazingly embedded in its doors and walls. The mosque's pillars, arches, courtyards and domes are magnificent. It was built 350 years ago by Aurangzeb's second son Shahjarda Muazzam Shah. Gorakhpur was named Muazzamabad after the name of Badshah Muazzam Shah. Urdu Bazar was also built by Badshah Muazzam Shah. The army of the Mughal Sultanate used to stay here. On the demand of the public, the order to build Jama Masjid Urdu Bazar was given by Bahadur Shah I alias Muazzam Shah. Its construction started under the supervision of the army's Chakladar or Subedar Khalilur Rahman. The city of Khalilabad was named after this Khalilur Rahman. At that time, the Rapti river flowed beside this mosque. Due to which its foundation was built in a large area. The width of this mosque is 90 feet from north to south and about 80 feet from east to west. The three domes of the mosque are a living symbol of its grandeur. The Mughal carvings on the minaret and door walls are charming. The door of the mosque also expresses its glory. The mosque is open from all four sides. More than 600 people offer namaz here at a time. More than five thousand people offer namaz here on Juma, Alvida, Eid, Eid-ul-Azha. There are seven more mosques under this mosque. These include Sangi Masjid, Saudagar Mohalla, Hansupur, Akhara Wali Masjid, Halsiganj's mosque, Maharajganj district's Jama Masjid, Masjid Musafir Khana. The current Imam of Jama Masjid Urdu Bazaar is Abdul Jalil Sahib. He told that the first person to offer namaz in this mosque was an elder from the family of Haji Mazhar Ali Advocate of the famous Rais family of Shahmaroop Market. This mosque is like the mosques of the royal era. There is a huge crowd here during the month of Ramzan. Imam Abdul Jalil told that he has been serving this mosque for four generations.
