Sultan Syed Shah Mutaharuddin Suhrawardi (969–1039), also called Dada Hayat Mir Qalandar or Nathar Wali or Nadir Shah, was a Muslim mystic and preacher from the Middle East. He migrated to Tamil Nadu in the 11th-century, where he traveled from area to area to preach the faith of Islam to the locals. He came to Trichy in the 11th century; his shrine is in Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, which according to legend, is atop the grave of the three-headed Hindu demon Tiriasuran whom Dada killed.
According to the sources, Tabl-e-Aalam Badshah was born as Syed Mutaharuddin in Anatolia region to the King of Bahanasa, King Ahmed Kabeer and Syeda Fathimunnisa (Descendants of Prophet Muhammad through Ali and Husayn ibn Ali). He had a younger brother Syed Jalaluddin who became the King after he left the Kingdom for the journey of Sufism.
Nathar Wali left his comfortable life in search of Murshid (spiritual preceptor). He was a Qalandar (unmarried saint) who came to India and 900 Qalandars to spread Islam. Before coming to India, he became the Mureed (Student) to Ibrahim Garamseel near the Pakistan region, after traveling his journey towards different parts of India. At last, he reached Trichy and settled there. During this time, he performed miracles. Along with his qalandars, he came to Tiruchirapuram, now known as Tiruchirappalli, and led a religious life with his qalandars in a flower garden.
Nathar Vali was one of the first saints who spread Islam across India. He was the king of Istanbul. The nobleman gave up his throne and moved in search of Murshid. Mohammed Rasoolallah guided him to visit India and spread Islam. He reached Tiruchirappalli in the 11th century with his 900 qalandars. He lived a saintly life in the flower garden in the region. Nathar Vali died on the 15th day of Ramzan month in Hijiri 417, a busy day for the Dargah as people come here to pay homage to the holy saint. The annual Urs Mela is held here. Nathar Vali Dargah is on top of the grave of Hindu demon Tiriasuran. Baba Nathar killed Tiriasuran and saved the people from his atrocities. According to Vedic Sastras, the Dargah is constructed, and it has four doors and a fine architectural design. A burning lamp of desi ghee is placed near the shrine of Baba. The religion celebrates the first 17 days of Ramzan as the Kanduri Urs on a large scale. The entire Dargah is decorated with lights and is a beautiful sight to witness. You will find all the followers, including Muslims, Hindus, and Christians, celebrating Nathar Vali's Urs and seeking his blessings.
